NationsBenefits, a fintech, benefits and outcomes platform, has acquired food-as-medicine company Good Measures, the companies announced Tuesday.

Plantation, Florida-based NationsBenefits is a benefits administration company that partners with managed care organizations. It has more than 100 managed care clients and offers supplemental benefits, flex cards and member engagement solutions. Good Measures, based in Boston, offers coaching and personalized food prescriptions to support people’s health. It has licensed providers in all 50 states and works with health plans, employers, government programs and providers.

NationsBenefits already offers healthy food support, including through its NationsMarket offering, which provides medically-tailored meals, produce boxes, grocery boxes, healthy food cards and nutritional education for members. The company chose to acquire Good Measures to enhance its “ability to deliver comprehensive, end-to-end solutions that address the growing needs of healthcare members,” said Glenn Parker, MD, founder and CEO of NationsBenefits. He added that the combined entity will scale with Good Measures’ technology and coaching model.

“Good Measures brings proven expertise in Food as Medicine, with a unique approach that combines clinical coaching, personalized food prescriptions, and a tech-enabled platform,” Parker said in an email. “By integrating Good Measures’ capabilities with our existing fintech and supplemental benefit solutions, we’re positioned as the only vertically integrated platform that seamlessly combines fintech, healthcare, and outcomes for our over 100 health plan clients. NationsBenefits firmly believes multi-solution platforms are the future of healthcare and can capture the most value from each member interaction.”

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Good Measures’ CEO, Donna K. Lencki, will continue to lead Good Measures within NationsBenefits. She will support integrating Good Measures’ technology and coaching into the NationsBenefits platform.

“Our goals are to help make Good Measures’ solutions even more widely available and to strengthen our ability to improve member health outcomes,” Lencki said. “Through NationsBenefits, we have a unique opportunity to bring our clinical support and nutrition technology to new heights. … This partnership will allow us to better support managed care organizations and improve the health of members across the nation, making it easier for them to access nutritious food and sustained coaching that leads to long-term health improvements.”

There has been a growing focus on food-as-medicine programs in the healthcare industry. And for good reason: about 13.5% of households in the U.S. were food insecure in 2023. In addition, about half of adults in the U.S. have one or more preventable chronic disease, and many are related to poor quality eating patterns.

There are several other companies in the food-as-medicine space as well, including NourishedRx, Season Health and FarmboxRx.

Looking ahead, NationsBenefits and Good Measures aim to expand their reach by “leveraging the combined strengths of NationsBenefits and Good Measures to address diet-related health conditions on a national scale,” Parker said. “By supporting members in making healthier choices and achieving better health outcomes, we’re committed to driving value for our partners and empowering millions of people to live healthier lives.”
