How Mass General Brigham has fought Dana-Farber’s proposed hospital

A fight over the future of cancer care is playing out in a behind-the-scenes battle over Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s proposed new hospital, underscoring the intense stakes in the business breakup between two of Massachusetts’ most prominent health care brands.

Dana-Farber has proposed building a $1.7 billion, 300-bed cancer center as it severs its long-standing partnership with Brigham and Women’s, which provides in-hospital care for Dana patients.

But the acrimonious split between the two storied institutions took another turn when a new report from the state of Massachusetts revealed that Brigham’s corporate parent, Mass General Brigham, has been lobbying against the Dana-Farber project, saying it is unnecessary, too big, and would raise health care spending in the state.
