The Supreme Court’s vote to overturn Roe v Wade in June 2022, and the general election coming up this November have brought national attention to women’s health. In this climate, femtech companies are well positioned to support women’s health equity.
Femtech entrepreneurs address some of the challenges and unmet needs associated with menstruation, menopause and overall sexual health, including the impact on physical health and mental health. At the same time, they often have to overcome the challenge of pitching to would-be investors who may lack enough knowledge of women’s health issues to make informed decisions.
Although the personal health information is invaluable to women and clinicians to develop health insights, this data could also potentially be used by states to prosecute those deemed to be in violation of the new restrictions, creating privacy concerns for users. But the move by some state governments to acquire data on pregnant women residing in their locales in their efforts to enforce bans on most abortions poses a threat to the privacy of personal health information.
In the eBook Femtech Revolution: How Entrepreneurs Are Championing Women’s Health Equity, articles highlight femtech to help track menstruation and how femtech can support access to care for women. It also addresses women’s health literacy among investors and data privacy concerns over how states enforcing abortion restrictions will use personal health data collected by femtech companies.
