PLT Health’s Serezin targets the pain-sleep cycle with Boswellia serrata + ginger. New study: 64% better restorative sleep, 2.6x less nighttime pain, improved mood in 4 weeks. Perfect for athletes battling pre-workout hangovers + training inflammation. 300mg/day.
PLT Health Solutions has developed a unique approach to sleep support with Serezin, a patented extract combining Boswellia serrata and Zingiber officinale that targets the connection between everyday aches and poor sleep quality. Recent clinical research published in the journal SLEEP demonstrates significant improvements in restorative sleep, pain reduction, and mood enhancement in just four weeks of supplementation.
Serezin: A Sleep Aid Targeting the Pain-Sleep Negative Feedback Loop
This is perfectly timed — more adults report sleep quality issues related to physical discomfort from daily activities, work-related stress, and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle punctuated by intense exercise, the need for sleep solutions that address root causes rather than just symptoms has never been greater. Serezin’s unique approach of tackling the pain-sleep cycle represents a fresh perspective in a category traditionally dominated by neurotransmitter-focused ingredients.
The sports and active nutrition market has taken further notice, with many brands recognizing Serezin’s potential for active individuals who struggle with sleep disruption from pre-workout stimulants combined with exercise-induced inflammation.

PLT Health Solutions: Growth Through Innovation
And it gets even better: Chronic, low-level inflammation is also a factor here, not just pain. Discussed later in the mechanisms section, the researchers show that Serezin significantly reduced TNF-alpha in these subjects, and TNF-alpha is both an inflammatory mediator and a major regulator of sleep. Because of these impacts, Serezin has phenomenal promise, working in a completely different fashion from other sleep aid ingredients.

What is Serezin?
Serezin is PLT Health’s patented “Restorative Sleep + Pain Relief” ingredient that combines standardized extracts of Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata) oleo-gum resin and ginger (Zingiber officinale) rhizome in a synergistic blend. Unlike traditional sleep aids that may work on neurotransmitter pathways, Serezin takes a different approach by addressing musculoskeletal discomfort and chronic inflammation that can interfere with quality sleep.
The ingredient addresses a very fundamental connection: when everyday aches and pains keep you uncomfortable at night, falling asleep becomes difficult, sleep quality suffers, and you wake up feeling unrefreshed. By targeting pain and inflammation through natural botanical compounds, Serezin aims to unlock better sleep from a different angle.
Boswellia serrata, commonly known as Indian frankincense, has been used for thousands of years in traditional Ayurvedic medicine and contains potent anti-inflammatory compounds called boswellic acids.[1] This same botanical is also featured in PLT Health’s respiratory health ingredient AlvioLife, demonstrating the versatility of this ancient resin. Zingiber officinale, commonly known as ginger, brings its own well-established pain-modulating and anti-inflammatory properties to the formulation.[2]

Ancient meets modern with frankincense resin and ginger root. These botanicals pack centuries of traditional use alongside proven anti-inflammatory compounds like boswellic acids and gingerols that target the root cause of sleep disruption.
The Salter 2025 Study: New Clinical Evidence
The recent research supporting Serezin was conducted as a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study and published as an abstract in the May 2025 edition of SLEEP journal.[3] The study was designed and conducted by PLT Health’s Senior Clinical Research Manager, Dawna Salter-Farfan, PhD, RD, along with collaborators in India.
Study design and participants
The four-week trial recruited 60 healthy men and women between ages 40-70 (mean age 52) with BMI ranging from 20-29.9 kg/m². All participants reported poor sleep quality due to mild musculoskeletal discomfort. Subjects were randomized to receive either 300mg of Serezin daily or matching placebo, with measurements taken at baseline and weeks 1, 2, and 4.
The researchers used validated assessment tools including the Restorative Sleep Questionnaire (RSQ), Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire (LSEQ), Profile of Mood States Questionnaire (POMS-SF), visual analog scales for pain, and the Consensus Sleep Diary. They also measured inflammatory biomarkers including TNF-α levels.
Week-by-Week Results

Four weeks of research reveals how 300mg daily transforms sleep and mood. From rapid pain relief at week one to 64% better restorative sleep by week four, these charts demonstrate why addressing inflammation changes everything about how you rest and recover.
Week 1: Rapid onset of benefits
Within just seven days, participants taking Serezin experienced significant improvements compared to placebo. Most notably, subjects reported waking up feeling more rested and restored, with significant restorative sleep benefits shown on day 7 of supplementation, the earliest time point assessed in the study.[3]
Pain reduction also began early, with significant improvements in both daytime and nighttime discomfort scores starting at Day 7. This rapid onset suggests that Serezin’s anti-inflammatory mechanisms begin working quickly to address the underlying musculoskeletal issues interfering with sleep.
Week 2: Sleep quality and mood improvements
By the two-week mark, the benefits expanded to include sleep quality and ease of falling asleep. Participants taking Serezin experienced improvements in getting to sleep that were 85% greater than placebo and 93% greater improvements in sleep quality as measured by the LSEQ.
The wake-up experience also improved significantly at this time point. Subjects reported having an easier time waking up in the morning and feeling more alert with better motor control upon awakening. Additionally, mood improvements became apparent, with Serezin subjects showing enhanced mood states across multiple domains including reduced tension, depression, anger, and fatigue while experiencing increased vigor.
Week 4: Continued improvements of benefits achieved
After four weeks of supplementation, participants reached the study’s most impressive outcomes. The restorative sleep improvements peaked at 64% greater than placebo, while pain reduction reached substantial levels with 2.6x greater reduction in nighttime discomfort and 75% greater reduction in daytime discomfort compared to placebo.[3]
Perhaps most notably, the study found that Serezin significantly improved sleep, not just statistically, but in ways that were shown to be meaningful to the people taking the supplement, a metric known as the Minimally Important Difference, or MID. This objective standard was applied to the results of the gold standard Consensus Sleep Diary, to find out what proportion of subjects taking Serezin achieved clinically meaningful improvements in Total Sleep Time, Sleep Efficiency, Sleep Onset Latency (how long it took to fall asleep), and Wakings After Sleep Onset. All four of these parameters were significantly improved by Serezin.

Wake refreshed and ready to tackle your day. This patented blend of Boswellia serrata and ginger tackles the aches that keep you tossing at night, delivering measurable improvements in sleep quality and morning alertness within just one week.
Consider Total Sleep Time. An increased sleep time of >15 minutes might be statistically significant, but it does not meet the threshold of clinical significance (MID) to the person taking the supplement. It would take an improvement of >30 minutes to hit that mark. Fifty-seven percent of the subjects taking Serezin had an increased total sleep time of that magnitude, compared to only 17% in the placebo group; and fully one-third of the subjects taking Serezin improved their total sleep time by >60 minutes, whereas only 3% (1 person) in the placebo group did. These are massive numbers!
Serezin also significantly improved 5 out of 6 sub-domains of mood, as assessed by the Profile of Mood States test. Tension, Irritability, Sadness, Fatigue, and Confusion were all significantly improved by Serezin. Some, like irritability, were significantly improved as early as 7 days. By week 4, Serezin subjects reported a 2.2x improvement in overall mood compared to their baseline.
A Focus on Women’s Health
One notable aspect of the research was a separate analysis focusing specifically on the female participants in the study. This women-only cohort analysis demonstrated that Serezin’s benefits were consistent across gender lines, with female participants showing significant improvements in pain reduction, restorative sleep, sleep quality, and mood outcomes.
This gender-specific analysis is valuable given that women often experience different sleep patterns and challenges compared to men, and it suggests that Serezin’s mechanisms of action are broadly applicable. PLT Health presented these findings at the SLEEP 2025 conference in Seattle, emphasizing the ingredient’s effectiveness in supporting women’s sleep health needs.
Safety and biomarkers
Throughout the four-week study period, Serezin demonstrated an excellent safety profile with no serious adverse events reported. All safety parameters remained within normal ranges, supporting the ingredient’s tolerability for daily use.
The study also measured serum TNF-α levels, finding that this inflammatory biomarker was significantly lower in the Serezin group compared to placebo by day 28. This provides objective evidence that Serezin’s anti-inflammatory effects extend beyond subjective pain scores to measurable changes in inflammatory markers.

Quality assessment scores reveal ginger’s strongest research areas. With 43 high-quality trials standing out, the data shows where this ancient root shines brightest — from easing chemotherapy-induced nausea to calming arthritis and metabolic issues that can disrupt your sleep.[4]
Understanding the Mechanisms
While the study focused on clinical outcomes rather than detailed mechanistic exploration, the ingredient’s components provide insight into how Serezin works. The Boswellia serrata extract contains boswellic acids, with AKBA (3-O-acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid) being one of the most potent natural inhibitors of 5-lipoxygenase, a key enzyme in inflammatory pathways.[5]
Zingiber officiale (ginger) contributes its own anti-inflammatory and pain-modulating effects through multiple pathways. A comprehensive systematic review of 109 randomized controlled trials found that the root demonstrates significant analgesic properties and can help reduce various types of pain and inflammation.[4]
Consider TNF-Alpha
But perhaps the most telling mechanistic evidence came with Serezin’s impact on TNF-α levels in this study. According to a 2017 review in Sleep Medicine Reviews, “Research over the past 25 yrs has comprehensively qualified TNF as a key sleep regulatory molecule, using the widely accepted criteria for sleep regulators.”[6] This review highlights four important connections between TNF and sleep regulation:
People with pathologies associated with high systemic TNF levels likely also exhibit sleep abnormalities, such as fragmented sleep;
Systemic TNF induces brain production of sleep-altering cytokines;
Normalization of excessive systemic TNF improves sleep; and
Pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines influence physiological sleep and sleep responses to pathological insult.

Science confirms what your body already knows — high TNF levels fragment your sleep. This research shows how inflammatory signals directly impact brain function and sleep cycles, explaining why reducing TNF-alpha (like Serezin does) leads to more restorative rest.[6]
In the clinical trial of Serezin, TNF-α — a sensitive marker of inflammatory response and a critical sleep regulatory molecule — was significantly improved compared to both baseline and to placebo.[3]
Implications for the sleep support category
Serezin brings a novel advancement to sleep support ingredients by addressing sleep issues through a pain-inflammation pathway rather than traditional neurotransmitter-focused approaches. This mechanism may be especially relevant for the growing population of adults experiencing sleep disruption due to everyday physical discomfort.
The ingredient’s dual approach — addressing both the physical discomfort that interferes with sleep and the resulting sleep quality issues — offers formulators a unique positioning opportunity. Rather than promoting drowsiness, Serezin takes a more holistic approach by removing barriers to naturally restorative sleep.

From resin to rhizome — these natural ingredients combine to break the pain-sleep cycle. Each 300mg dose delivers standardized extracts that reduce TNF-alpha and quiet nighttime discomfort for better rest.
The relatively rapid onset of benefits, with improvements seen as early as one week, also sets Serezin apart from ingredients that may require longer supplementation periods to show effects. This could be valuable for consumers seeking more immediate sleep quality improvements.
Formulation considerations
Based on the clinical research, the effective dose of Serezin is 300mg daily, taken as a single dose. The study participants took their daily dose for 28 days to achieve optimal results, suggesting that consistent daily supplementation is preferable to sporadic use.
For formulators, Serezin offers flexibility as it works through mechanisms distinct from traditional sleep aids, making it potentially compatible with numerous other sleep-supporting ingredients that work through different pathways. The ingredient’s focus on pain and inflammation also makes it suitable for nighttime recovery formulas or products targeting active individuals who may experience exercise-related discomfort affecting their sleep.
The standardized nature of the extract ensures consistent potency and reliable results across different product formulations, which is crucial for brands seeking to make evidence-based claims about their sleep support products.

From morning beverages to bedtime gummies, you’ll find a format that fits your routine. Whether you prefer traditional capsules or trendy stick packs, 300mg of this sleep-supporting duo works in any form your customers demand.
Sports Nutrition Applications: Beyond the Pre-Workout “Hangover”
The sports nutrition industry has increasingly recognized Serezin’s unique positioning for active individuals facing a common modern dilemma: stimulant overload from pre-workout supplements combined with exercise-induced inflammation creating a perfect storm for poor sleep quality.
The Active Lifestyle Sleep Challenge
Many dedicated athletes and fitness enthusiasts find themselves caught in a cycle where their commitment to training actually undermines their recovery. High-stimulant pre-workouts combined with intense inflammatory training sessions can create sleep disruption that persists well beyond the expected caffeine clearance time.
Unlike traditional sleep aids that can leave users feeling groggy or “hungover” the next morning, Serezin’s non-sedative approach allows athletes to wake up refreshed and ready for their next training session. This makes it an attractive option for individuals who need consistent performance day after day.
The Non-Sedative Advantage
Traditional sleep ingredients often work by promoting drowsiness or affecting neurotransmitter pathways in ways that can impact next-day alertness and performance. Serezin’s mechanism of addressing sleep quality through pain and inflammation reduction means users can experience better rest without compromising their ability to perform at high levels the following day.
This benefit has resonated strongly with sports nutrition brands seeking to address their customers’ recovery needs without the typical sleep aid trade-offs. The ingredient allows formulators to create nighttime recovery products that complement rather than compromise training regimens, and it fits naturally into their recovery-focused formulas.
Conclusion: The Sleep-Pain Connection Leads to a Natural Solution
The clinical research on Serezin yields impressive results across multiple measures of sleep quality, pain reduction, and mood enhancement. With benefits appearing as early as one week and reaching peak effectiveness by four weeks, this unique botanical blend offers a compelling approach to sleep support that addresses root causes rather than just symptoms.

A respiratory support ingredient AlvioLife from PLT Health pairs Boswellia serrata with Aegle marmelos, showing 16% improved lung function and 39% fewer symptoms in clinical studies.
For the sports and active nutrition market specifically, Serezin offers a compelling solution for athletes and active individuals who experience the common challenge of stimulant-induced sleep disruption combined with training-related inflammation.
A Sleep Aid Ingredient Unlike Any Other
By targeting the pain-sleep connection through natural anti-inflammatory mechanisms, Serezin provides formulators with a scientifically-backed ingredient that differentiates itself in the crowded sleep support category. The excellent safety profile and rapid onset of benefits make it an attractive option for consumers seeking natural solutions to sleep quality issues related to everyday physical discomfort.
As PLT Health continues to present this research at major scientific conferences like SLEEP 2025, Serezin appears positioned to become a significant player in the evolution of sleep support ingredients toward more targeted, mechanism-based approaches.
